“I Want to Have People Running to Get Hearing Tests!”

Ingrid Vanderveldt wants people to get their hearing tested

Ingrid Vanderveldt knows what it is like to conquer outstanding obstacles. She is a media personality, entrepreneur, and advocate who has accomplished great things despite being told “no” throughout her life. From founding Empowering a Billion Women by 2020 to becoming one of Oprah’s Supersoul 100, she has succeeded in her efforts and inspired people across the globe!

Although Ingrid is widely successful today, as a child she was told she would never amount to much. Due to an undiagnosed hearing loss, her grades were falling behind and her teachers doubted she would ever be able to overcome her challenges. Her principal even told her that she could no longer attend public school when she was in fourth grade. Unfortunately, this is common for children whose hearing loss goes unnoticed or untreated.

After years of testing, Ingrid’s hearing difficulties were addressed and she began to excel; however, she did not receive hearing aids until a little over a year ago. Up until that time, her hearing loss affected her performance as an active public speaker and she would often have to cup her hand around her ear to hear questions in large crowds.

It wasn’t until over a year ago when Dr. Natalie Phillips, a Global Ambassador of Empowering a Billion Women by 2020, learned about Ingrid’s hearing difficulties and fit her with hearing aids.

“She heard my story, and knew that I never went to get hearing aids,” says Ingrid. “It was her encouragement that led me to get tested and fit. I will never forget that moment and her generosity. Being fit for hearing aids was like getting a pair of glasses and seeing for the first time. All of a sudden the world became clear.”

Ingrid’s hearing aids have significantly impacted her career, her relationships with others, and her quality of life. She finds she is not as tired with her hearing aids because she does not have to put forth so much extra effort when listening and speaking. Ingrid dedicates herself to helping others on a daily basis, and hopes to inspire others suffering from hearing loss. She says,

“I love to share my own story and the difference being able to hear clearly has made. In 4th grade I was told I would amount to nothing, and now I oversee a global initiative like Empowering a Billion Women by 2020.

All of this was made possible simply because I had incredible people around me at a young age who pushed me until I learned. Imagine the difference we can make together! I want to have people running to get hearing tests like no other!”
