Gerry Hughes, 55, from Glasgow, Scotland, made maritime history on May 8th when he became the first deaf man to successfully circumnavigate the globe on his boat, the Quest III.
Hughes began the 32,000 mile journey on September 1st, 2012. Despite a capsize, equipment failures and other hardships over the eight-month journey, Hughes made it back to Troon marina safe and sound.
“The last eight months have been amongst the toughest of my life,” said Hughes in an article featured on The Hearing Times. “Now, I hope that following and completing my dream can encourage young people who face similar difficulties to see that their hopes and aspirations can still be fulfilled through belie and hard work.”
