School's new playground designed with hearing impaired students in mind

Before building a new playground for its students, the St. Philip School in Phoenix, AZ decided to take all of its students into consideration.

In June, the kids will vote on what kind of swings, slides and other playground accessories they want to see at St. Philip’s. The school has a “heightened awareness” of hearing loss, due to the presence of teachers who specialize in working with deaf and hearing-impaired students and nine students who have hearing loss.

The school is proposing dry-eraser boards to be posted on the playground for easy communication and is suggesting steel equipment be chosen over plastic or wood, because the metal vibrates, allowing for added communication.
