NFLPA Welcomes EarQ to Provide Hearing Solutions for Players

New Discount Program Will Provide Hearing Loss Education, Evaluations and Hearing Devices to NFLPA Members and Their Families

October 10, 2011

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) welcomes EarQ, a national network of hearing healthcare professionals, to provide an education and hearing aid discount program for active and retired members of the NFLPA and their families.

The new EarQ discount program reinforces the association’s commitment to the well?being and improved quality of life of its members and their families, according to Andre Collins, NFLPA Director of Former Player Services. “We are very excited that EarQ will be working with our players. It will be a beneficial and highly utilized program, aimed at strengthening our members’ hearing health,” he said. “I can’t think of one person who played in the NFL who doesn’t have some sort of hearing loss.”

During their careers, players are exposed to high?decibel hearing environments and the challenging physical nature of the game, in addition to the regular hearing strain experienced over a lifetime. The overall goal of this much needed program is to increase awareness of this silent epidemic, and enrich the lives of NFLPA members and their families by improving their daily connections with each other, while enhancing their interactions in social situations and business relationships, Collins added.

More than 280 million people worldwide live with hearing loss, reported Ed Keller, founder and president of EarQ, noting that occupational factors, such as working in loud environments, the risk of repeated head injuries and stress can contribute to a higher incidence of impairment than in the general population. Left untreated, hearing loss can inhibit social interaction and a person’s ability to perform daily activities, which can lead to withdrawal, isolation, depression and increased instance of heart disease. Yet, only 20 percent of people with hearing loss use a hearing device, cited Keller.

“While this discount program with the NFLPA will have an impact on its members and their families, it also serves as a spotlight on hearing loss for everybody,” said Keller. “All people over the age of 45 should consider getting hearing evaluations to detect hearing concerns, and address the hardships in their daily interactions that may result. By providing this discount to the players, we hope to raise awareness on hearing impairments, lessen the stigma of using hearing devices, and help the general public improve their hearing health.”

This discount program is also available to members of the NFL Coaches Association. Informational packets on the EarQ/NFLPA Member Hearing Education and Discount Program are being mailed to members in October, and hearing evaluations will be available at the NFLPA’s annual meeting in 2012.
